Auto Racing Died 107 Years Ago. Really.

It was 107 years ago, on August 24, 1905 to be exact, that auto racing died. Or, more precisely, it was that date that “Motor Age” published a front-page story stating that track auto racing was going to die since the cars were getting just too fast for mortal men to handle.

Sounding off about these terrible speeds, the article said, “It was to be expected that sooner or later cars would be constructed too powerful for whirling around corners and at that time is evidently here men of daring are too scarce to travel at 70 miles an hour on a circular course.”

Of course, these days not only do we allow our daring men to travel regularly at such speeds, but even our women are permitted out of the kitchen to move along at 70 miles an hour while applying makeup and smacking the kids in the backseat.
